Gross GST mop-up surges by 14.8% to nearly Rs 2 lakh crore in August

Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue rose by 14.8 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 1,99,853 crore in August 2026 compared with Rs 1,74,116 crore collected in the same month last year.
However, GST collections declined from Rs 2.11 lakh crore in July 2026.
This surge was primarily propelled by import revenues, which jumped by 29 per cent to reach Rs 62,604 crore.
Meanwhile, the gross domestic GST revenues showed steady expansion, growing by 9.3 per cent to Rs 1,37,249 crore compared with Rs 1,25,570 crore in the same period last year.
The government registered a substantial escalation in disbursements of the total refunds during August 2026.
The total GST refunds climbed by 67.9 per cent YoY to Rs 31,795 crore, up from Rs 18,935 crore in August 2025.
The domestic GST refunds surged by 72.6 per cent to reach Rs 18,490 crore, while the Export Tax refunds processed via ICEGATE expanded by 61.8 per cent to Rs 13,305 crore.
Factoring in the surge in refund activity, the total net GST revenue stood at Rs 1,68,057 crore in August 2026, marking an 8.3 per cent growth over the Rs 1,55,181 crore collected in August 2025.
Within the net revenues, the net Customs GST revenue saw significant traction, rising by 22.3 per cent to Rs 49,299 crore, while the net domestic revenue grew modestly by 3.4 per cent to Rs 1,18,759 crore.
